The Dangers of Uninsured and Underinsured Drivers
They do not wear dark capes and cling to the underside of bridges, but there is a vampire lurking in the car next to yours at the light. He is waiting to suck up your assets and leave you a broken wreck of yourself. Sound like a B-movie plot line?
Okay, it does, but the guy in the car next to yours might very well be dangerous in a whole other way. Every day, countless uninsured and underinsured drivers put themselves and everyone else on the road at huge risk of financial ruin. Think about that the next time you head out on the road. If you get hit by someone without insurance, or with too little insurance, how will you ever manage? Sure, you have your own insurance, but now your rates are going to shoot up.
Even a minor accident will set you back by quite a bit in the long run.
How bad is the problem in the first place? The estimate is that one in seven drivers is uninsured and that number is only going to go up as the economy falters. Rising food and gas prices are driving insurance to the bottom of the budget pile. And the cost of the uninsured driver is being felt by those who abide by the law and pay for theirs. It doesn’t seem fair, but that is part of what happens.
Moreover, if you are hit by a uninsured or underinsured driver and injured, who is going to pay those medical bills?
That’s right, you are. Plus, the cost of your follow up treatments, the time off work and anything else that comes up. That is not even to mention the repairs or replacement of your car. These unplanned expenses can spell financial ruin to even the most prepared families.
Of course, you could seek legal action against the other driver, but how effective do you truly think that would be? Number one, they were driving without insurance, most likely because they could not afford it. Number two, they were ignoring the law which says that they must have insurance to drive. So, what have we learned? This person is not afraid to break a law and they probably do not have enough assets to make a lawsuit worth the effort and expense.
Being reminded in court that they are not allowed to drive without insurance will not deter them, and threatening to take away their license or their cars will not stop them either. If they want to drive, they will, consequences be damned.
An underinsured driver can be even worse. You have an accident and exchange information, calming yourself down with the knowledge that they other driver did have insurance. The claims adjuster gets started however, and you find out that they did not have enough insurance to cover your costs. Now you are left with a pile of medical bills, your car is still not repaired, and there is nothing else you can do.
